Tennis titans trading their rackets for clubs? You won't believe who's hitting the golf course!
It turns out that even the world's top tennis players have a soft spot for the greens. Fresh off securing his spot in the third round of the Australian Open, Carlos Alcaraz dropped a rather delightful revelation: he recently shared a round of golf with none other than the legendary Roger Federer!
During an on-court chat after his impressive second-round victory, Alcaraz couldn't help but gush about Federer's prowess on the golf course. When asked about his experience, the young Spaniard was full of admiration, stating, "It's as beautiful as the tennis. I'm not surprised, either. It's unbelievable. He does everything in a really beautiful style." He further elaborated, describing Federer's golf swing as "a really beautiful swing" and noting how exceptionally well he performs on the fairways.
But here's where it gets truly fascinating: Federer, who only picked up golf in the last couple of years, is already outperforming Alcaraz! Alcaraz, who started playing as a teenager and has a solid five years of experience under his belt, admitted with a chuckle, "I think he's been playing for two years now, and his level is really, really good for two years. I've been playing for five, and he already beats me, so it hurts!" The 44-year-old Swiss maestro, a remarkable twice Alcaraz's age, has clearly proven to be an incredibly fast learner.
Alcaraz also confirmed that he plans to make the most of Melbourne's renowned golf courses during his downtime from the tournament. "The golf courses are waiting for me, and I know that, and I will show up for sure," he declared.
And this is the part most people miss... The world of professional tennis is clearly a breeding ground for multi-talented athletes! It seems that even after retiring, the competitive spirit and desire for excellence don't fade. Take Andy Murray, for instance. The three-time Grand Slam champion, who stepped away from professional tennis about 18 months ago, has also found a new passion in golf. In fact, he's even contemplating a rather unusual career move: becoming a caddie for a touring professional!
Murray expressed his deep love for golf, stating, "I love golf, and if you love that sport, then I think it would be a great job." He's particularly enthusiastic about the idea of supporting a top player during crucial moments and contributing to their on-course strategy. His dream scenario? Caddying for Robert MacIntyre and witnessing him win The Open. "Imagine carrying Robert MacIntyre's bag when he wins The Open or something like that. That would be a dream job," he enthused.
While Murray's caddying ambitions are certainly unique, his personal playing aspirations are more grounded. He has no desire to compete in The Open Championship himself but hopes to reach a level where he could attempt regional qualifying rounds. "I want to try and play in like the regional qualifying at some stage. A couple of my friends have done it, and it would just be a fun thing to do if you got to the level where you're able to do that," he explained.
What do you think? Is it surprising to see such accomplished tennis players excelling in golf? And is Andy Murray's ambition to be a caddie a sign of a true sports lover, or just a quirky retirement plan? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
