Carnival! Takes Center Stage: Replacing Do I Hear a Waltz? in J2 Spotlight Season Off-Broadway
The 1961 musical 'Carnival!' will be a highlight of the 2026 season for Off-Broadway's J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company. This classic Broadway show, with its captivating story and memorable songs, is set to enchant audiences once again.
The decision to replace 'Do I Hear a Waltz?' with 'Carnival!' came as a result of a licensing agreement change with Concord Theatricals. The original musical, with music and lyrics by Bob Merrill and a book by Michael Stewart, tells the tale of Lili, a young woman who embarks on a journey of self-discovery and love within a traveling carnival. It premiered on Broadway in 1961 and received critical acclaim, earning seven Tony Award nominations and two wins, including Best Actress for Anna Maria Alberghetti.
J2 Spotlight's Artistic Director/Co-founder, Robert W. Schneider, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, 'Talk about landing on your feet! Just a few days ago, we faced a setback due to a licensing glitch. However, we swiftly secured the rights to 'Carnival!'. This musical is a treasure, with clever lyrics and emotional depth, reminiscent of Broadway's Golden Age.'
The production will feature Schneider's direction, Liz Hastings' musical direction, and Kaitlyn Frank's choreography. Casting, led by Holly Buczek, will be announced soon. The show promises to be a delightful addition to the season, joining 'Milk and Honey' and 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood'.
'Carnival!' is a timeless story of illusion and reality, love, and independence, based on the 1953 film 'Lili' by Helen Deutsch. With its captivating narrative and memorable melodies, it's a must-see for theater enthusiasts, offering a glimpse into the golden era of Broadway musicals.
