These aren't just your average browsers with a chatbot sidebar. They possess "agentic capabilities," meaning they can perform tasks like booking flights or making reservations. But here's where it gets controversial: an investigation by Aisvarya Chandrasekar and Klaudia Jaźwińska of the Columbia Journalism Review revealed that Atlas seems to sidestep sources of information from companies currently suing OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT.
Think of it like this: regular web crawlers, the workhorses of the internet, typically obey instructions to avoid certain pages. If you ask ChatGPT to pull information from a site that blocks crawlers, it usually won't. Agentic browsers, however, operate differently. They act as if you are browsing, allowing them to bypass some of these restrictions. This is because Atlas is built on Google's Chromium browser.
But here's the kicker: when asked to summarize articles from PCMag and The New York Times—both of whose parent companies are locked in legal battles with OpenAI over alleged copyright violations—Atlas took a detour. It seems to go out of its way to find alternative sources, almost like a digital maze runner avoiding electrified zones.
For PCMag, it turned to social media and other news sites, gathering information from citations and tweets. For The New York Times, it pulled summaries from outlets like The Guardian, The Washington Post, Reuters, and the Associated Press. Interestingly, all but Reuters have partnerships with OpenAI.
