A veteran sportswoman's honest confession: The Jealousy of a Legend.
In a recent interview, Cora Staunton, an 11-time All-Star winner and a true pioneer in Irish women's sports, revealed a surprising emotion. Despite her incredible achievements, Staunton admits to a twinge of jealousy when reflecting on the current state of women's sports in Ireland.
But here's where it gets controversial: Staunton, now the vice-president of the Gaelic Players Association, has played a pivotal role in shaping the structures that benefit today's female GAA stars. So, why the jealousy?
"I think it's natural to feel a bit envious when you see the progress made since your time," Staunton explained. "But I'm also incredibly proud to have been a part of that journey. There's still so much growth potential in women's sports, and I want to ensure we keep pushing forward."
Staunton's advocacy doesn't stop there. She's a strong voice for better support for female sports stars in Ireland, a cause she champions in her GPA role. "We need to ensure our players have the best opportunities, whether that's in Australia or right here playing Ladies Gaelic football," she emphasized.
And this is the part most people miss: Staunton is optimistic about the future of women's sports in Ireland. She's hopeful that the Steering Group on Integration (SGI), led by former President Mary McAleese, will successfully merge the LGFA, GAA, and Camogie Association by their target date of 2027.
"Integration is hugely important. It's something I've been advocating for years, and I believe we're on the right track. There's still a lot of work to be done, but I'm confident we can get there."
However, Staunton acknowledges the challenges ahead. "There are struggles, and we can't ignore them. But I believe integration will help address many of these issues. It's about making brave, difficult decisions to ensure the right future for women's sports."
