Ed Mildred Shatters British Record in SCM 200 Butterfly at Swim England National Winter Championships
The 2025 Swim England National Winter Championships, held at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield, England, from December 11th to 14th, witnessed a thrilling showdown in the 200m butterfly event. On the final day of competition, 22-year-old Ed Mildred of the Manchester Performance Centre made history by breaking the supersuited British record.
Mildred's lightning-fast performance of 1:50.64 not only secured him the gold medal but also marked a new lifetime best. This achievement was all the more remarkable considering he bested Josh Gammon, the 100m fly champion, by a significant margin.
Gammon, also 22 years old, took the silver medal with a time of 1:51.17, while Luke Greenbank, a backstroke Olympic medalist, finished in 1:55.33, claiming the bronze.
Mildred's triumph was all the more impressive as he shattered the longstanding British benchmark of 1:51.27, set by Joe Robuck at the 2009 European Championships. His split times of 25.08/28.33 (53.41)/28.25/28.98 showcased his exceptional swimming prowess.
Prior to this competition, Mildred's personal best in the 200m butterfly was 1:53.01, achieved during the semi-finals of the 2023 European Short Course Championships. His extraordinary performance tonight saw him improve by over two seconds, solidifying his place in British swimming history.
This achievement adds to the growing list of successes for Mildred, who has undoubtedly earned his spot as a rising star in the British swimming scene.
