Emergency Water Ban in Bonavista Due to Ice Blockage (2026)

Emergency water ban in Bonavista as ice blocks Long Pond intake

Bonavista residents are being asked to conserve every drop as an emergency water ban is enacted. Officials say ice has formed at the bottom of the Long Pond water intake, preventing new water from entering the town’s supply.

What happened
Anchor ice has developed at the base of the Long Pond intake, attaching to underwater structures and effectively stopping the flow of water into the system. Once the current stored water runs out, there will be no additional supply.

What residents should do
- Immediately reduce non-essential water use.
- Avoid laundry, dishwashing, and long showers.
- Limit flushing and turn taps off tightly.

The ban remains in place until further notice while crews assess the situation and work on a solution.
