F1 Sprint: Kimi Antonelli's P2 Finish Boosts Mercedes' Confidence (2025)

A thrilling race at the Sao Paulo Sprint has left Kimi Antonelli and the Mercedes team brimming with confidence. With a strong P2 finish, Antonelli showcased his talent and the team's potential, despite the highly competitive field.

The young driver, only 19, narrowly missed out on pole position, but his performance during the Sprint at Interlagos was impressive. Starting with a shaky beginning due to the tricky, damp conditions, Antonelli quickly settled into second place, showcasing his ability to adapt and his skill behind the wheel.

A red flag interlude added an extra layer of challenge, but Antonelli's defensive skills came to the fore. With dry patches scarce, he managed to keep his teammate George Russell at bay, setting his sights on the Sprint leader, Lando Norris.

Norris, on old soft tyres, was within Antonelli's DRS range for the final five laps, but the McLaren driver just managed to hold on. Antonelli finished less than a second behind, a testament to his relentless pursuit.

"It was an incredibly fun race," Antonelli shared. "The conditions were tricky, especially at the start. We kept the pressure on Lando, but tyre degradation and increasing wind made it a real battle."

Despite the challenges, Antonelli's confidence remains high, but he acknowledges the tight field. "The competition is fierce. Yesterday, putting together a perfect lap was tough, and everyone made small mistakes. Today, we'll aim to build on that and hopefully improve."

The result was a boost for the entire Mercedes team, with Russell finishing closely behind in third. As they head into an unpredictable Qualifying hour, the team is feeling optimistic.

"It was a great race for both of us," Russell explained. "Kimi did an excellent job and put Lando under pressure. P2 and P3 is a fantastic result, but we need to replicate that this afternoon."

When asked about the impact of the relatively dry conditions, Russell responded, "Qualifying laps are very different from consecutive laps. There was significant tyre degradation, making the end of the race tricky. Lando seemed to struggle with that."

As the team prepares for the next challenge, the cool temperatures are a welcome advantage. "We feel confident and ready. Let's see what we can achieve later!"

So, will Mercedes continue their strong performance into Qualifying? And can Antonelli and Russell maintain their momentum? Join the discussion and share your thoughts!
