As of January 1st, 2026, Lerone Murphy, the undefeated featherweight contender, found himself sidelined from a title shot against UFC champion Alexander Volkanovski. Murphy had been anticipating a December showdown with the champ, a chance to prove himself against one of the sport's all-time greats. But here's where it gets controversial... the UFC decided to book Volkanovski in a rematch against Diego Lopes at UFC 325, scheduled for January 31st at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. This decision left Murphy, and many fans, scratching their heads. Volkanovski won the first fight against Lopes, so why another one instead of giving Murphy his shot?
Murphy's frustration is understandable. He boasts an impressive 17-0-1 record (9-0-1 in the UFC) and was coming off a spectacular Knockout of the Year contender victory against Aaron Pico at UFC 319. In a recent interview with Demetrious Johnson, Murphy expressed his disappointment. "Now I don't get the chance to fight Volkanovski," he lamented. "I know he's going to retire after this fight. That's a legend. Being able to test my skills against a legend, to have his name on my resume is massive. It's something that I'm never going to be able to get now because of that. Not because I didn't earn it, because of obviously favoritism and whatever." The sting of missing out on a potential legacy fight is clearly weighing heavily on Murphy. He feels he earned his title shot, but that external factors played a role in the UFC's decision. "I believe they're going to book me for London. That's what it looks like, anyways," Murphy said. "I think they're going to book me for London. I think it's going to be (Movsar Evloev or Aljamain Sterling). I don't care. Obviously people hype up fights, they know that if you cause an argument on Twitter, maybe the matchmakers catch wind, the fight has a bit of backstory there, and I think that's why these guys do it... To me, that's the same fight. Aljamain Sterling or Movsar, same fight, same problem, similar styles. I'm preparing myself for that fight in March."
