A life-changing upgrade has arrived at Kasanje Health Centre III, and it's all thanks to a generous donation that will revolutionize maternal care in the area. With a value of Shs 62 million (USD 16,700), this donation is a game-changer for expectant mothers and their families.
The Rotary Club of Kampala East, in collaboration with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has made it their mission to enhance maternal healthcare services. And they've certainly delivered! By providing a brand-new ultrasound machine and other essential medical equipment, they've addressed a critical gap in the community's healthcare infrastructure.
Adam Mbayi, the facility's in-charge, couldn't hide his excitement. He highlighted the challenges they faced due to the lack of scanning services, which often meant referring mothers to distant hospitals, involving long trips and ferry crossings. "The scanning machine will be a game-changer for our community," Mbayi said. "We can now offer better, more accessible services to our expectant mothers."
Previously, mothers had to travel to facilities like Mpigi Health Centre IV, approximately 11 kilometers away, for ultrasound scans. But with the new equipment, the centre can now detect complications early on and monitor the well-being of unborn babies right in their own community. "With this scanner, we can ensure the safety of both mother and baby," Mbayi added.
To ensure the equipment is utilized effectively, at least two staff members have been selected for training. They will operate the machines daily, from Monday to Friday, ensuring that the centre can provide timely and accurate scans.
Rodney Twagarukaho Bagamba, President of the Rotary Club of Kampala East, explained that this donation was a direct response to the findings of their community outreach program. "We identified significant gaps in maternal and child healthcare support. The facility lacked essential machinery and electricity, yet women from various areas were seeking support. We knew we had to act."
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contributed a significant amount, Shs 64.1 million (USD 18,000), as part of their humanitarian aid program. David Mutesasira, a counsellor with the Church, emphasized the initiative's goal: to reduce prenatal deaths, a pressing challenge in Uganda. "We wanted to ensure that the health centre had the basic equipment needed to support life and provide the best care for mothers."
Jonathan Gayiira, the Mayor of Kasanje Town Council, welcomed the donation, recognizing its impact on the local community. "This equipment will make a huge difference, especially for mothers who needed scans but couldn't afford the high costs of private facilities."
The upgraded services are expected to benefit residents across all 37 villages of Kasanje Town Council. With timely, life-saving maternal healthcare now accessible locally, the need for costly referrals to distant hospitals will be significantly reduced.
