Get ready for a wild ride as we dive into the craziest Paris Supercross night ever!
The Night of Upsets and Surprises
In a city known for its elegance and sophistication, the 2025 Paris Supercross delivered an evening that will go down in history as one of the craziest. With over twenty Supercross events under my belt, I can confidently say that night one of the Paris Supercross took the cake for sheer craziness.
The Rockstar Husqvarna Dominance
Rockstar Husqvarna's Malcolm Stewart, or Mookie as he's known, swept all three main events with remarkable ease. Stewart, who hadn't been riding much leading up to the event and didn't seem confident about winning, utilized his exceptional starts and superior whoop speed to dominate the night. He passed Cooper Webb of Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing in the first main event, led wire-to-wire in the second, and then passed Jett Lawrence in the third, showcasing his dominance.
When asked about his surprising performance, Mookie admitted, "I kind of surprised myself!" He added, "I was having a blast out there, nailing the starts, whoops, and everything. That was just night one; we've got another night to go. We can improve, especially with the carnage involving the Lawrence brothers. I felt like I rode a clean race and brought it home."
The Lawrence Brothers' Misfortune
The night started on a sour note for the Lawrence brothers, Hunter and Jett. Hunter went down in the first turn, and then Jett was taken out by an out-of-control Tom Vialle, making his Honda debut. Vialle's mistake on the triple jump caused him to bounce off the fourth jump and take Jett down with him. From there, the brothers fought back, but Jett could only manage fourth, and Hunter finished eighth. The road to reclaiming the King of Paris trophy, which Jett won in 2023, seemed long and challenging.
The Honda HRC Riders' Resilience
In the second main event, Stewart once again took the lead and checked out with the win. Hunter wasn't too far behind, and Jett finished third, keeping the Honda HRC riders in contention. They managed to pull away from Webb and went into the longer third main with an okay outlook. However, the third main event proved to be a disaster for the Australian brothers.
Jett got passed by Malcolm in the first straight, and then Hunter got by him as well. The order remained unchanged from there, with Stewart leading, followed by the Lawrence brothers. Unfortunately, Jett washed his front end before the whoops, causing him to twist his bike and DNF. This marked the third crash of the night for Jett, who also lost the front in the Superpole contest after the first main.
Things took a turn for the worse when Hunter had a scary endo in the whoops, cutting his night short. He stayed down for a while, walked off, and then sat back down to receive medical attention. It was a far cry from the vacation he had envisioned in Paris.
According to sources, the Hondas the brothers were riding didn't have their factory motors, and the engines weren't up to their usual standards. They also encountered suspension difficulties, leading to an uncharacteristic performance for the Lawrence brothers.
Webb's 'Okay' Night
Cooper Webb had an 'okay' night, running up front in the first main before dropping back. He mentioned the need for bike changes for the second main, and after some suspension adjustments, he was more competitive. However, the 2025 AMA Supercross Champion seemed off the pace set by Malcom Stewart.
Tom Vialle's Honda HRC Debut
Tom Vialle made his much-anticipated Honda HRC 450 debut, but his night was marked by the incident with Jett Lawrence. Beyond that, he performed adequately, finishing around sixth or seventh in qualifying and improving in the mains.
The Challenging Track Conditions
The whoops were indeed massive, favoring Stewart's riding style. Marshall Weltin described them as the biggest whoops he's ever ridden! Unlike previous years, the track maintenance didn't smoosh the whoops as much, making them even more challenging. The dirt was harder than usual, adding to the difficulty of the course.
The Overall Standings
With the Lawrence brothers having a bad night and Stewart dominating, Malcolm leads Webb by five points after night one. Cedric Soubeyras is in third place with 13 points. With Olympic-style scoring, it's highly unlikely that anyone other than Stewart or Webb will take the King of Paris honors tomorrow afternoon, unless a complete disaster strikes both riders.
So, there you have it! A wild and crazy night at the Paris Supercross, filled with surprises, upsets, and some unfortunate incidents.
