The Marlins' Marsee and Lopez: A Tale of Two Prospects
The Next Frontier for Marlins' Marsee
The Miami Marlins' Jakob Marsee had an impressive debut season, especially in his first month. With a .352 batting average, four home runs, 25 RBI, and nine steals in August, he became the first Marlins player to reach base four times in his debut and tied a franchise record with seven RBI in a game. However, his performance slowed in September, with a .231 batting average and only one homer. Marsee attributes this to overadjusting to different pitching strategies, and he's determined to get more consistent.
Lopez's Defensive Journey
Shortstop Otto Lopez, who had a breakout season last year with 15 homers and 77 RBI, is focused on improving his defense in his first full season at shortstop. He's studied the techniques of Mets' Francisco Lindor and Kansas City's Bobby Witt Jr., and he's also reviewing his own game footage from last season to enhance his range, throws, and positioning. Lopez is confident he can do better than last year, despite committing 10 errors in 111 games at shortstop.
Mesa's Marlins Exit
Victor Mesa Jr.'s time with the Marlins came to a quiet end when he was traded to Tampa Bay. He was designated for assignment days earlier in exchange for minor-league shortstop Angel Brachi, who hit .337 in the Dominican Summer League last season. Mesa Jr. hit .188 with one homer and six RBI in 16 big-league games last season, and the Marlins' early investment in him and his brother, Victor Victor Mesa, didn't yield the expected results.
The Marlins' Future Plans
Marlins president/baseball operations Peter Bendix reiterated at FanFest that the team will try to sign several players to contract extensions. They want to keep their best players for as long as possible, and they expect to have many of these good players for a long time. The Marlins' first-base battle and starting rotation are also areas of interest, with Barry Jackson providing insights into these topics in his Florida Sports Buzz column.
