Measles Update #67: A New Exposure Site Identified in Morden
Public health officials are raising the alarm about a recent measles exposure in southern Manitoba. Here's the crucial information you need to know:
Exposure Site: Garden Valley Wellness Centre Inc., located at 239C Stephen St., Morden.
Date and Time: January 13th, from 2:40 p.m. to 4:50 p.m.
Monitoring Period: Symptoms should be monitored until February 4th.
If you were at this location during the specified time, it's essential to check your immunization records and ensure you're up to date with the measles vaccine (MMR or MMRV).
Here's where it gets controversial... For those exposed and born in 1970 or later, who have never had the vaccine or measles infection, the vaccine is recommended. However, certain groups, like infants under six months, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems, should not receive the vaccine. These individuals should seek preventative treatment if eligible.
And this is the part most people miss... If you were exposed, it's crucial to reduce contact with others, especially those with weakened immune systems or who are unimmunized, from day five after exposure until day 21 after the latest exposure. Watch for symptoms until the date specified above.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, spread through airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing. It can lead to severe complications, especially in infants and young children, and may be life-threatening. Immunization is our best defense, and it's crucial to ensure everyone is up to date.
In Manitoba, a two-dose measles vaccine program (MMR or MMRV) is routinely given to children aged one year and again between four and six years. In cases of exposure, a second dose may be given earlier. There's also an outbreak eligibility for children aged six months to under 12 months.
