Arsenal fans, brace yourselves: William Saliba's unexpected injury has thrown a wrench into the team's plans.
Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, has shed some light on the situation following Saliba's absence from the crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea. It's a blow, no doubt, especially considering Saliba's importance to the Gunners' defense.
Saliba, unfortunately, picked up an injury during a training session, forcing him to sit out the match at Stamford Bridge. Arteta revealed that the French international experienced some discomfort, leading to his withdrawal from the game. 'Yesterday in training he was uncomfortable, so we need to explore a little bit more what happened,' Arteta explained before the match. 'I don't think it's something major, but enough not to be involved in the game.'
Following the exciting 1-1 draw, Arteta offered further insight into Saliba's fitness. This absence marked only the second time in the last three years, three months, and 25 days that Arteta has been unable to field either Saliba or Gabriel Magalhaes, who is also dealing with an injury, in a Premier League match. Arteta admitted that this situation has presented a challenge, given the need for numerous adjustments in recent months due to various circumstances.
Arteta highlighted the unexpected nature of Saliba's injury, emphasizing the team's adaptability. 'The beauty of it is that you have players so willing to play, so willing to connect with each other. We will build a relationship even better. So today was a great learning match for all of us and as well give you the assurance that whoever is there is going to perform.'
As for Saliba's return timeline, Arteta remained uncertain, stating, 'I don't know. I think he's got another test tomorrow. We'll need to see the extent of that feeling, that sensation that he had. And we'll know more with Gabi still more weeks to go.'
Despite the draw against Chelsea, Arteta praised his players for their efforts, particularly after a demanding week that included victories over Tottenham and Bayern Munich. 'It's been a big week, starting with the derby. How emotional and the necessity and the intention we have to win it,' the Spaniard explained. 'Then to play Bayern Munich three days later. We lost players in those games.'
Arteta acknowledged the challenges, including a makeshift back four and the absence of key players like the captain, the number nine, and Kai Havertz. He also noted the loss of Leo Trossard during the week. 'I think overall it's been a really positive week because the difficulty was immense. But I have this [feeling] that today we should have and we could have won the game and we haven't. That's a learning point for me.'
But here's where it gets controversial... Could this injury be a turning point for Arsenal? Will the team's depth be tested in the coming weeks? What are your thoughts on Arteta's handling of the situation? Share your opinions in the comments below!
