The Battle for Consistency: Will the NPP Stick with Dr. Bawumia?
In a bold move, Evans Yaw Dapaah, the Oti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged party faithful to stand by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their presidential candidate for the 2028 general election. According to Dapaah, consistency is the key to victory, and the party's history shows that sticking with a candidate ultimately pays off.
But here's where it gets controversial - should the NPP risk changing horses mid-stream or trust in Dr. Bawumia's leadership? Dapaah thinks it's a no-brainer. "There's wisdom in consistency," he declared to thunderous applause from delegates and party supporters. "We've seen it time and time again - parties that stick with their candidates are often rewarded with electoral success."
Dapaah pointed to the NPP's own history, citing the examples of John Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, both of whom faced skepticism but went on to win the presidency after the party stood by them. He also referenced the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), highlighting how their loyalty to leaders like the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills and former President John Dramani Mahama ultimately paid off.
The Party's History is Clear: Loyalty Pays Off
"Kufuor didn't win in 1996, but we stood by him, and he won in 2000," Dapaah recalled. "When Nana Addo came, people doubted him, but we backed him on three occasions, and he eventually won." Dapaah argued that Dr. Bawumia, having served as Vice President and NPP flagbearer in 2024, deserves the same show of confidence and support.
But what about the potential risks of sticking with a candidate who may not win? Dapaah warned that replacing Dr. Bawumia would undermine the NPP's unity and future growth. "If we don't retain him, it will have a huge negative effect on our party," he cautioned.
As Dr. Bawumia embarks on a nationwide grassroots campaign tour ahead of the NPP's January 2026 primaries, the party faithful are eagerly watching to see what the future holds. With four other aspirants vying for the party's ticket, the stakes are high.
The Question is: Will the NPP Stick with Dr. Bawumia or Shake Things Up?
