The NRL world was left reeling by a seismic shift: Payne Haas, a true ‘superstar’ of the game, is leaving the Brisbane Broncos! This bombshell announcement has sent shockwaves through the league, and Haas himself has revealed the profound personal toll it took, admitting to “sleepless nights” over his decision to join the South Sydney Rabbitohs. But what truly drove this monumental move, and what about the whispers surrounding his former coach? Let's dive in.
Haas’s agreement to join the Rabbitohs from 2027 on a three-year deal, with a player option for 2029, caught everyone by surprise. Even his soon-to-be teammates were taken aback; Jack Wighton famously described seeing the news and thinking it was an early April Fool's joke!
But here's where it gets personal... Speaking from London ahead of the World Club Challenge, Haas shared that his decision was heavily influenced by his family and a deeply established connection with legendary coach Wayne Bennett. “It was definitely hard,” Haas confessed. “I had some sleepless nights before I made that decision. But as a father, as a leader of my family, I’m content with that decision. I had to make the call.”
He elaborated on the pivotal role Bennett played: “To be honest, it wouldn’t have been that easy if I didn’t have Wayne there... obviously having Wayne there made it a bit easier for myself. I’ve got that sort of connection and relationship already.” This bond isn't new; Bennett was the one who gave Haas his NRL debut, and their connection is rooted in shared life experiences. Haas revealed, “My brother (Chace) was quadriplegic, he was disabled and he (Bennett) had a son who was disabled. That’s how we sort of connected.” This shared understanding, Haas believes, has fostered a relationship built on trust.
And this is the part most people miss... While the prospect of reuniting with Bennett was a significant factor, Haas vehemently dismissed any rumors suggesting he was unhappy with current Broncos coach Michael Maguire's demanding training. “I get along with Madge a lot. We won an Origin together and a premiership and there’s no sour taste or bad blood,” Haas stated. He labeled suggestions of discontent as “a bunch of BS”, emphasizing that he and Maguire are on good terms and that Maguire was understanding of his decision, as was his close teammate Patrick Carrigan.
As the Broncos prepare to defend their premiership in 2026, they face the challenge of filling the void left by Haas. Speculation is rife about potential replacements, with Mitch Barnett reportedly on Brisbane’s radar. Meanwhile, young prop Xavier Willison is being touted as a future superstar ready to step up. Jack Gosiewski described him as a player with “massive potential,” who is already “big, strong, powerful and unbelievably fit.”
Now, over to you: Do you believe Haas's decision was solely about family and Bennett, or do you think there's more to the story? Is it fair for players to make such significant moves based on personal connections, or should club loyalty always come first? Share your thoughts in the comments below – we’d love to hear your take!
