A New Era in Portuguese Rail Travel Begins with the Arrival of the First New Train in 23 Years
In a significant milestone for Portugal's railway system, CP (Comboios de Portugal) has welcomed its first of 22 new regional trains produced by Stadler. This order was finalized in 2020 under the leadership of António Costa during his second term as Prime Minister.
According to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Housing, the inaugural railcar was officially delivered on December 18, 2025, marking a crucial enhancement to regional services. It is anticipated that this train will become operational in the latter half of 2026.
"It has been over two decades since the last new train was introduced in Portugal, making this a vital advancement toward modernizing and ensuring the sustainability of CP's fleet, which in turn will improve service quality," emphasized the ministry, led by Miguel Pinto Luz.
This newly delivered railcar is part of a broader order consisting of 22 trains from Stadler, which includes 12 bi-mode trains that can operate on both electric and diesel power. The total investment for this initiative amounts to €158 million, primarily aimed at enhancing regional services along the Oeste and Alentejo railway lines.
The ministry also pointed out that the funding for this €158 million project is backed by the Sustainable 2030 program and the Environmental Fund, showcasing a commitment to greener transportation options.
"This marks the initial phase of an extensive investment strategy that aims to introduce approximately 200 new trains into CP's operations," the ministry stated. These new railcars are expected to significantly bolster the sustainability of the fleet and cater to the rising demand from railway users, which is projected to reach 200 million by 2025.
The agreement, signed in October 2020 for the acquisition of the Flirt model, encompasses the delivery of 12 Bimode Self-Propelled Units and 10 Electric Self-Propelled Units. Additionally, it includes the provision of necessary parts and maintenance services for at least three years, along with training for staff.
