Facing a life-altering diagnosis can be terrifying, but imagine finding hope in a place you least expect. This is the story of Michael Ojabo, a 38-year-old Nigerian man who underwent a groundbreaking surgery in Oman to remove a rare and aggressive tumor.

Doctors at Aster Royal Al Raffah Hospital in Al Ghubra, Oman, performed a complex 11-hour surgery to remove a rare tumor that had spread from Michael's nasal cavity into his brain and eye socket. Michael, an IT professional, battled a worsening condition since 2018. What started as a simple nasal blockage evolved into debilitating symptoms: intense facial pressure, bulging eyes, and severe pain. He was diagnosed with an inverted papilloma, a benign but aggressive tumor. This type of tumor accounts for only approximately 0.5-4% of all nasal tumors, and is most common in patients aged 40-60 years, with a higher prevalence in males. Michael was turned away by several hospitals in his home country and the region due to the tumor's dangerous location and the high risk of complications.
Inverted papillomas are rare, with only 0.75 to 1.5 cases per 100,000 people annually. The World Health Organization classifies papillomas into three types: exophytic (squamous), inverted, and oncocytic (cylindrical cell), with inverted papillomas being the most common. After extensive online research, Michael found hope in Oman. He chose the country for the hospital's reputation and the skilled Omani doctors who gave him confidence.

On May 24, 2025, an all-Omani and regional team of specialists in ENT, neurosurgery, eye surgery, and anesthesia performed the complex surgery. The tumor, which had invaded the brain and eye socket, was successfully removed using a combination of endoscopic and open surgical methods. The team used a highly advanced surgical approach, combining technology with expert skill, because of the tendency for this type of tumor to return and affect nearby areas.
The surgery was led by Dr. Khalil Ibrahim Macki, Senior Consultant ENT, Head and Neck Surgeon, in collaboration with Dr. Shashivadhanan, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery, Dr. Alyaqdhan Al Ghafri, Consultant Oculoplastic Surgeon, Dr. Abdullah Al Jadidi, Consultant Neuroanesthesia, Dr. Narendra Kumar, Specialist Anesthesiologist, and Dr. Vidya Bhargavan Panicker, Specialist ENT. The team worked in perfect coordination, beginning with a craniotomy to access the brain and remove the part of the tumor that had spread there. They then removed the rest of the tumor from the nasal cavity and eye socket, protecting vital areas and minimizing damage. Advanced techniques like image-guided navigation, real-time monitoring, and microscopic tools ensured the tumor's safe and complete removal. A follow-up care plan was arranged with doctors in Nigeria to support Michael after his return.
Michael's breathing tube was removed the same day, and he was discharged from the hospital just five days later. His recovery was smooth, and follow-up scans confirmed complete tumor removal, with no damage to his brain or vision. Today, he's living a healthy, active life.

Dr. Shashivadhanan added that the tumor's invasion of the cranial cavity and orbital space, pressing against critical neural structures, made this a demanding case.
