Roadworks are hitting where it hurts: the RSPCA in Coventry is seeing a drop in donations due to a road closure, and the impact is significant.
The Coventry and District Branch of the RSPCA is facing a challenge. Roadworks on Coundon Wedge Drive, specifically for a new cycleway, have created difficulties. This is happening during a critical period for the charity.
Here's what's happening: The road is closed daily from 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM GMT. This closure has caused a decline in the number of adopters, donors, volunteers, and suppliers visiting the center.
Centre manager Lorraine Bryan-Arnold explained the difficulties, mentioning issues with deliveries and transportation services like Uber. She highlighted that the next two weeks are usually the busiest for donations.
Coventry City Council responded, stating that they've been working to manage access to the RSPCA center and have been in close contact with the staff. They also mentioned that the road resurfacing work, part of the Coundon cycle route extension, is scheduled to be completed by Friday, December 19th. They assured that pedestrian access and safe access for staff and visitors have been maintained.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the council emphasizes the importance of the cycleway, the RSPCA is feeling the pinch. The timing of the roadworks, coinciding with a crucial donation period, has created a real problem.
