Steven Gerrard Defends Liverpool's Isak, Predicts Upward Trajectory
In a passionate defense of Liverpool striker Alexander Isak, Steven Gerrard believes the Swedish forward's fortunes will soon turn around after a challenging start to his Liverpool career. Despite a record transfer from Newcastle in the summer, Isak has yet to find the back of the net in a red shirt, arriving at Anfield with limited match fitness. He has yet to secure a regular starting spot under Arne Slot, though he was given a chance against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
However, the match ended in a 3-0 defeat, and Slot opted to bring back Hugo Ekitike for the subsequent game against PSV in the Champions League. Gerrard, a former captain, remains confident that Isak will soon turn things around and believes his breakthrough moment for the club is on the horizon.
On TNT Sports, Gerrard said, "Isak had no service against Forest, and I felt sorry for him because he worked incredibly hard. It's clear he's rusty and needs more game time. Isak and Ekitike must be unselfish and understand that the manager will utilize them at different times. Missing a period of time or sustaining an injury doesn't mean you can just switch it on like a light and lose your rust. It's a process. He's doing extra training and needs minutes. He will shine for this club in the medium and long term. We need to be patient in the short term."
Gerrard continued, "There will be a game or moment in the next few weeks where he will feel fitter and stronger, something will click, and he will arrive at Liverpool. I am very confident of that."
Former Liverpool midfielder Steve McManaman echoed Gerrard's sentiments, expressing confidence that Liverpool will soon witness the best from the British-record signing. McManaman noted that Isak is adapting to a new set of teammates who play differently from those he played with at Newcastle. He emphasized that finding consistency and a way of playing with Isak will take time, just as it did for other players who joined new teams.
McManaman added, "He's getting used to a brand new set of teammates, who play completely different to the players he was with last season at Newcastle. They played to his strengths. This is very different. The main man has often been Mo Salah on the right-hand side. Everybody is trying to find a consistency and a way of playing, working out how to play with Isak, and it will take time. You have seen better players than him take time to gel in new teams. He has to be persistent, work hard, and most importantly, stay fit. If he stays fit, he will get there sooner rather than later. It's the same for Wirtz and Frimpong. They need to get up to the level of Liverpool Football Club. They have joined the Premier League champions."
Gerrard and McManaman's support for Isak highlights the club's faith in his potential, despite the current challenges. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Isak as he continues to adapt and find his place in the Liverpool squad.
