Tony Galvin's Road to Recovery: Tottenham Legend Battles Back After Stroke (2025)

Former Tottenham and Republic of Ireland winger Tony Galvin is recovering from a stroke, the club has announced. The 69-year-old made a significant impact during his time at Spurs, winning back-to-back FA Cups in 1981 and 1982. Galvin's contributions were crucial, starting all four matches, including the replays against Manchester City and QPR. His energetic charge down the left wing set the tone for the attacking play that led to Ricky Villa's famous solo dribble and shot in the replay against City. Galvin also played a pivotal role in the 1984 UEFA Cup final, starting both legs against Anderlecht, which ended in a penalty shootout after a 2-2 aggregate score. Despite his talent, Galvin chose to represent the Republic of Ireland, earning 29 caps and playing all three group matches at Euro 1988, including the celebrated 1-0 victory over England. Galvin's career continued with spells at Sheffield Wednesday and Swindon, where he worked as an assistant to his former Tottenham teammate Ossie Ardiles. The club has expressed its support, wishing him a swift recovery following his stroke.
