This project reframes the infamous Salem Witch Trials (United States, 1692) not as a historical anomaly, but as a chilling blueprint for the ongoing persecution of women.
Rooted in rigorous academic research, VERHEXEN cleverly extracts historical testimonies from their original context. It then uses carefully chosen objects as powerful metaphors to draw a direct line between the witch hunts of the past and the modern-day attacks on women's bodily autonomy.
Loeber masterfully blends documentary and conceptual art techniques with archival materials to dissect the performative nature of “justice,” employing a sharp, investigative irony. The work is anchored by compelling portraits of modern-day “Witches,” alongside staged recreations of alleged offenses and forensic documentation of artifacts – think witch bottles and abortifacients – all presented as if they were criminological evidence.
This visual approach is designed to make you, the viewer, actively participate in decoding fact from fiction. It forces us to confront the irrational reasoning used to condemn innocent women, a pattern that eerily echoes in today's headlines, especially those related to the criminalization of reproductive choices.
