The Netherlands is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in adult Catholicism, with a 40% increase in new adult Catholics in 2024. This trend is part of a broader phenomenon across Europe, with France, Belgium, and the UK also experiencing significant growth in adult baptisms. Despite a decline in infant baptisms, the number of adults joining the Catholic Church has surged, challenging traditional patterns of church attendance.
According to the Catholic Institute for Ecclesiastical Statistics (Kaski), the number of adults joining the Church rose from 455 in 2023 to 630 in 2024. This includes both adults who received baptism and those who were baptized in other Christian communities and later joined the Catholic Church. The report, dated September 2025, highlights a stark contrast between the decline in infant baptisms and the rise in adult conversions.
The total number of child baptisms fell by approximately 7% between 2023 and 2024, from 42,411 in 2000 to 6,110 in 2024. In contrast, more than 500 adult baptisms were administered in 2024, and over 100 adults joined the Church without baptism through confirmation and the reception of the Eucharist. Despite these smaller numbers, the total number of admissions increased by nearly 40% between 2023 and 2024.
Joris Kregting, a sociologist of religion, noted that the rise in new adult Catholics is a striking exception, corroborating recent media reports on the subject. The overall number of Catholics in the Netherlands, a country of 18 million people, fell from 5.1 million in 2000 to 3.4 million in 2024, representing 19.1% of the total population. However, the proportion of baptized Dutch Catholics attending weekly Masses has remained low, with only 2.7% attending in 2024, down from 9.2% in 2000.
The figures underscore the Netherlands' low levels of weekly Mass attendance among countries with a significant number of Catholics. The reception of other sacraments also appears to be in decline, with a 7% drop in children receiving first Communion and a 5% fall in young people receiving confirmation in 2024. Despite these trends, church weddings increased by 5.5% from 2023 to 2024, and the Catholic Church oversaw the funerals of almost 7% of all deceased people in the Netherlands in 2024.
